BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — According to local officials, over 20 roads in Bowling Green were impassable because of floodwaters on Monday, April 7. Parts of the Aviation Heritage Park on the city’s south end are completely submerged underwater.
“This one is about seven feet deep, Cave Mill is about 10 feet deep, it just depends on where it’s at,” Andy Souza, Public Works director said.
The high water is littered with debris and dirt. People living in the Spring Lakes neighborhood, like Allison Zimmermann are trapped.
Zimmermann said she was shocked to see that she couldn’t leave.
“This is the first time I’ve ever seen water like this. Not scared, just didn’t know what I was going to do,” Zimmermann said.
The Public Works department created a temporary road to help people avoid high water after several cars got stuck in the grass and mud. It took about seven hours to make, and cost the city about $10,000.
Many roads are still inaccessible because of the flooding. If a road is flooded and cannot see the bottom of the water, Souza said it’s best to stay clear from it.
“When in doubt, turn around and don’t drown,” Souza said.
Souza said flooded areas are likely to stay flooded for another seven to 10 days.
